Krakauer

Remember back when Gwennie posted this about Jon Krakauer? Well, the spell has taken me in as well. However, I'm going in a bit of a different order. I listened to Into Thin Air, just finished Under the Banner of Heaven and am now listening to Into The Wild.

I've seen the movie of Into the Wild so I have a good idea of the storyline, but I think his writing really does pull you in more than even a visual story can. Thoughts?

I'm also thinking that Under the Banner of Heaven will be my least favorite. I don't hate it persay.. and it definitely made me think... it's just... depressing. I realize that might be a funny thing to say since the other two also involve death, but it's in a totally different way. Murder vs. Extreme outdoors. I also have been telling people about Under the Banner and for some reason they always tell me to stop. Hmm.. Did anyone else read/listen to this?

By the way, is anyone buying an AT&T accessory anytime soon? I have a 25% off coupon and will mail it to you...

Did I never comment that? I listened to "Under the Banner of Heaven" and absolutely agree that it is depressing. I try to separate "the crazies" from the Mormon population in general (since every religion has crazies) but man...

It also awoke a strange desire in me to watch Big Love. I haven't followed up on it though.

I also like his "Into" books better. Maybe we should read Geiger Dreams?

Okay...that's on my short list of what NOT to read

I dunno... it's definitely interesting and, as usual, Krakauer does his (self-chosen) homework. I think it might be better to read as an informative book though, than to listen to.

...dragging out all the horribleness ;p Angela's Ashes looks great next to that (which I liked anyway, but yeah...)

I still haven't read Angela's Ashes.. probably should and I think we published it.

listen to it!!! Frank McCourt reads it himself, and it's on our :::cough::: audible!

I started UTBOH right after I finished Unbroken (great book) and stopped after 10 minutes because it was winter, dark a snow day and I decided I needed some fun fiction. It was too heavy right off the bat, I thought. I listened to one of the Outlander series instead, ha ha. (only Claire probably got that). Now I'm not sure I want to go back to it except that I bought but maybe I can justify my money's worth since you all listened to it and don't have to listen.

Have you read the Power of One yet? It's so good!

Hahaha... I do get it ;) I still haven't plucked up the courage to listen to the next one (in whatever order they go in...). I should probably find something other than Broadway nights. I sure wish there was another book by Seth Rudetsky... I am also sure that Kristin Chenoweth is supposed to be LuAnn(?), the one auditioning to be the canary.

What should I read (read: listen to) next though?!?!

I haven't read the Power of One or Outlander, but I really wish we could burn these audiobooks to CD! I want to listen to them on the long car ride to SC. Especially Bossypants so that David has to listen to it too.

UTBOH is probably worth reading, it's just hard to get through. I did, however, get through it faster than the Elegance of the Hedgehog if that means anything. Does it? Does it? Also, I agree with Claire on the self-chosen homework for Krakauer. I like his writing style but he does come off a bit biased from the start.

I'm not quite sure David would enjoy "Outlander"... though he might think it kinda funny. Not to sound super oldfashioned but... can't you just rent a book on cd from the library? Or get one from work even?

I would recommend Power of One over Outlander. It's definitely a "guy" book. Such an interesting story and semi-autobiographical. I'm surprised it's not more talked about as a 20th century coming of age classic.

Downloading "Power of One" right now! I decided I need a book with maybe less focus on animals and Broadway
(and 30 Rock).

... but then, I was away from the computer and wanted to hear a book, and hadn't put "Power of One" on yet, and am stuck like a dragonfly in amber of days of listening to a book ahead of me...
